Frequently Asked Siding Questions
How strong is fiber-cement siding?
Fiber- cement siding is designed to last a lifetime. It will withstand winds to 130 mph, has a fifty year warranty, is dimensionally stable and will not sag or lose its shape over time. Fiber- cement is resistant to fire, pests, termites, rot and extreme weather conditions. Fiber- cement is five times the thickness of vinyl. It is impervious to woodpeckers, carpenter bees, squirrels, etc.
What colors can fiber- cement be painted?
Paint in any color of the rainbow. Fiber- cement has great paint retention and is has the natural look of wood.
Is fiber- cement siding hail resistant?
Yes. Fiber- cement siding is hail and wind resistant. It does not easily damage from wind- blown debris.
What is the composition of James Hardie fiber- cement siding?
Only the finest raw materials are used in James Hardie fiber- cement (Hardiplank, Hardishingle, and Hardipanel). Premium Portland Cement, finely- ground sand, natural cellulose fibers and water are combined and cured through a proprietary process into the most durable siding.
Is fiber-cement siding resistant to mold?
Absolutely. Fiber-cement is sealed to keep out moisture. Coatings contain ingredients which protect against mold growth. If dirt or debris is splattered against the siding, the siding cleans easily with water from the hose.
How is fiber- cement siding installed and how long does it take?
In most cases, the existing siding is removed. This is particularly true when the original siding was composite hard-board or standard wood siding. An underlayment to protect against moisture infiltrations is applied to the exterior of the house and then the fiber- cement is nailed to the existing structure. No nails are visible on lap siding and shingles. The installation process usually takes 5-7 days depending upon the magnitude and complexity of the installation. Custom coating, if required, usually require an additional 2-3 days.
What is the James Hardie Warranty?
James Hardie has a 50 year warranty.
Should I have my windows replaced when I replace the siding?
Yes if you need them. It’s a great time to replace them while the siding is removed and if they do not provide adequate insulation. However, windows can be replaced later if desired.
Do you replace soffit and fascia with fiber- cement products?
If the soffit and fascia is in good condition, we do not replace them unless noted in your contract. However, most of our projects include replacement at the same time new siding is being installed. It depends upon the condition of the existing products and the desire of the client.
On what types of houses do you normally install fiber- cement?
Fiber- cement is appropriate for nearly the entire spectrum of homes and buildings. We can remodel the exterior of historic homes and buildings that comply with the requirements of the National Registry and homes and buildings where maintaining the original architectural features is important. We have sided small bungalows, condominiums, mansions, and others valued in the millions.
Is Fiber- cement siding affected by weather extremes?
No. This is one of the greatest attributes of fiber- cement siding. It is dimensionally stable meaning it has a low coefficient of expansion and contraction relative to temperatures. It is resistant to hail and there are many examples of homes and businesses surviving recent hurricane conditions in the Southeast U. S. Gulf States without sustaining significant damage.
